Dancers rehearse at the barre in the Hildegarde Lewis Dance Building.
A dancer enjoys the view from the barre.
A breeze sweeps across the shores of Green Lake, gently stirring strands of hair that have worked their way loose of tightly-wound buns. Sun glints off the waves, dappling the wooden walls of the studio. Over live piano music, an instructor calls out the next movement. Shoes squeak and bodies rustle in response.
For generations of dancers, it’s a familiar scene. Since 1950, the students of Interlochen Arts Camp, and later Interlochen Arts Academy, have been inspired to soar higher by the beautiful view from the Hildegarde Lewis Dance Building.
In the fall of 2019, Interlochen Center for the Arts broke ground on a much-needed renovation and expansion to the historic building. The Oct. 18 event was made possible by donors who have already given more than $6.9 million to the Dance Building. Thanks to their generosity, the project needs only a small final push to be fully funded.
This March, we invite you to join our crowdfunding effort to make a professional quality facility a reality for Interlochen’s dancers. Join us March 16-20 and be a part of the transformation of dance. Thanks to an exciting matching challenge sponsored by an anonymous donor with multigenerational ties to dance at Interlochen, every gift—of every size—will make a difference in the life of an Interlochen dancer.
If you have ever enjoyed the view from our barre or admired the grace and strength of dancers, we encourage you to save the date for the crowdfunding challenge and join in to help create the future of dance at Interlochen. Stay tuned to our social media channels and watch your email for more information on how you can take the Dance Building renovation to the finish line.
