News briefs: March/April 2017

Peter Erskine (IAA 68-71, IAC Fac 10) performed on the Oscar Award-winning original score for the movie La La Land.

After a 40-year battle for gender equality in collegiate sports, former faculty member and past chair of the Interlochen Alumni Council Dr. Sheryl Szady (IAC/NMC St 71-79, IAC/NMC Fac 80-84, IAA Fac 76-82, 83-84, IAA St 75-76) was presented with a varsity letterman jacket by the University of Michigan. Thanks to Szady’s work, more than 700 former women’s varsity athletes received letterman jackets from the university free of charge.

Marcy Heisler (IAC/NMC 82-84) contributed several songs to the new Netflix original series, Julie’s Greenroom starring Julie Andrews. Fellow alumnus Josh Groban also appears on one episode of the show.

Terry Crews (IAC/NMC 86) is the co-host of the American version of the new Netflix original series Ultimate Beastmaster. The show is a reality athletic competition that pits competitors from six nations against an obstacle course called “The Beast.”

Mohammed Naseehu Ali (IAA 88-91, IAA St 92-94) has had an article published in The New Yorker: “My Long, Unfinished Path to Becoming an American Citizen.”

Derek Frank (IAC/NMC 89-90, IAA 90-91) is now playing bass with Air Supply. He joined the band after a successful comeback tour with Shania Twain. The band continues to tour around the world, averaging 120 shows a year.

Garth Greenwell’s (IAA 94-96) debut novel, "What Belongs to You," was selected as a fiction finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Winners will be announced on April 21.

Dan Amboyer (IAC/NMC 95-98, IAA 99-02) stars as “Trevor” on the new spinoff of the popular NBC show Blacklist. The new series, Blacklist: Redemption airs on Thursday evenings at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

Mary Holland (IAA 01-03) has been cast as the co-star in the ABC comedy pilot Household Name. Holland, who appeared this season in Starz’s Blunt Talk and HBO’s Veep, will star opposite Carol Burnett and Mark Oberg.

Lauren Duski (IAC 01) has advanced to the next round of NBC’s reality series The Voice. Duski performed Jewel’s “You Were Meant for Me” in her first televised appearance on the show.

Hilary Purrington (IAC 08) and Daniel McGee (IAA 15-16, IAC Fac 16) were selected to write commissioned pieces for the 55th season of the New York Youth Symphony. Purrington will write a piece for full orchestra that will premiere at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage on November 17. McGee’s piece will be for chamber ensemble and will premiere on May 3, 2018 at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Bassist Sebastian Zinca (IAC 11, IAA 12-13) will perform a commemorative concert at Auschwitz Concentration Camp on June 27. Zinca and violinist Ariel Horowitz will present a program that features their own original compositions as well as as an arrangement of Roxanna Panufnik’s Hora Besarabia, a defiant piece based on the music of Jewish and Romany cultures.
